Maranda Jane talks about songwriting
“My songs are written about a broad range of human experiences. In short, they are songs about life. To me, a song is lyrical poetry that sort of “individualizes” emotional and social phenomena that are pertinent to all human creatures.
I try to write songs that are carried along with an interesting and meaningful melody, a chord progression that accentuates the message of the song, and with a rhythm and meter appropriate to make the listener want to keep listening – and get the message!
Some are songs about love (and in some cases about lost love) that, generally speaking, were written from personal experiences or observations of experiences of others. Those kinds of songs describe circumstances most all people have experienced or will experience in their lifetimes. I believe the song “Adalynn” – though clearly written about an individual, carries an underlying message that hopefully will raise awareness of domestic abuse, eventually leading to a cultural mindset that will totally reject such a thing.
Other songs describe a different kind of social circumstance that I believe needs to be changed.
Here is an example: I believe the song “Mr. Mr. Mr.” clearly explains an unacceptable way of thinking that often occurs in relationships between men and women – that is, speaking of the population as a whole, men tend to think that women are somehow less capable of performing ordinary tasks than they are, and it is partially because of this wrong headed perception some have, that they think they are in some way superior to a woman. I believe that notion is wrong and I believe it needs to be changed. Mr. Mr. Mr. describes the phenomenon in a not too tongue in cheek way. Some will understand the meaning of my songs from the start, some will understand later on, and it may be that a few never will.
I’m all about social justice and doing what I can to change the world in a positive way. I think all decent people are like that. If you have read this far I know you are too. So! explore the site if you are of a mind to, purchase my album or a digital download of any songs that you fancy, give it a good listen and let’s all try to do our part to change the world for the better.”
Thank you. MJ
